He does this due to being gay in his culture of his birth but it also serves the purpose of hiding his powers that have only really manifested themselves in his mid-thirties. Leon's Gleaned dead have their full minds and identities as opposed to being the shambling zombies that the rest of the family has always made. Leon's cousin, Parley, also manifests his powers at nearly the same time and when the fifteen year old plays on his pawn shop guitar, the undead masses rise to dance with him.
