Zion’s Gleaners - Book One by Aaron Campbell
The Goates family. A family who is in the funeral business in Salt Lake City and has been since the days of Brigham Young. Their business has grown and prospered while hiding a secret. Certain members of the family can raise the dead with varying skill and this was Brigham Young's secret to holding the Utah Territory. In the present day, our main character, Leon Goates,, is a deeply closeted practicing Mormon man who hides in plain sight via driving a ten year old Toyota Camry and dressing out of a JCPenney catalog. He does this due to being gay in his culture of his birth but it also serves the purpose of hiding his powers that have only really manifested themselves in his mid-thirties. Leon's Gleaned dead have their full minds and identities as opposed to being the shambling zombies that the rest of the family has always made. Leon's cousin, Parley, also manifests his powers at nearly the same time and when the fifteen year old plays on his pawn shop guitar, the undead masses rise to dance with him. ZION'S GLEANERS is a book that explores self-worth, antediluvian Mormonism, living one's truth, the ramifications of what hiding in plain sight means and the prospect of death becoming optional for the human race
